    RUSTY GUNMAN COURSE PROGRESSION

Rusty Gunman Courses are MDW firearms focused courses. The Rusty Gunman courses will get you up to speed with your handgun, shotgun and carbine fundamentals. The level up courses will refine and push your core skills (Some may call these advanced skills sets but it boils down to creating context then doing and applying basics better). The Rusty Gunman also provides a range of courses that apply these skills in various tactical focus courses such as low light or fighting in and around vehicles.

Core Skills
Rusty Gunman Courses focus on ensuring safely handling your firearm for both range and street environments. The Rusty Gunman Core Skills will also help you with decision making with regard to carry and use of your firearm in your everyday life.

Who will benefit from the Rusty Gunman Courses?

  • New shooters and new gun owners

The Rusty Gunman Core Skills Courses provide a bridge for new shooters from the regulated licensing requirements to been comfortable and safely handling their firearm on the range as well as their everyday environment.

  • Experienced shooters that have got a bit Rusty and want to get back on the bicycle, the
  • Rusty Gunman refreshes and refines existing skills.
    Sport Shooters that recognise the importance of range safety yet recognise the need for adjustments in certain skills, safety and targeting for concealed carry street environment.

Core Skills

Advanced shooting is Basics done better with a focus on making smooth faster, linking precision marksmanship, instinctive shooting, tracking, and transitioning between targets. Existing skill sets are expanded on and given broader contexts.

Basics Done Better. Balancing speed, distance, and pressure is related to the accuracy required in high-risk scenarios. A natural extension of the Rusty Gunman Handgun Course.

Tactical Focus
Tactical focus courses deal with specific challenges faced in the field environment. It is advisable that before attending any of the Tactical Focus Courses that you have completed at least the Rusty Gunman Core Skills workshop for the relevant weapons platform/s that you will require on Tactical Courses

Earn your Rusty Gunman “Challenge Patch”

A fun way to test yourself and know that your handling skills are top-notch. These challenging, and fun shoots with specific challenges and time restraints that we will run 2-3 times a year. Often combined with a braai or social afterward.

This is our flagship course for extreme close-quarter gun work and is the link between empty hand/edged weapon threats into the gun world. Weapon Access and retention under pressure are a priority in an environment where close-quarter attacks are commonplace. Where losing your firearm to attackers is a real threat for those that do not prepare for this type of confrontation.

The MDW Plug and press course is an information and practice session, that focuses on the use of first aid supplies designed for the first line in field care of wounds that result in catastrophic bleeding and or injuries to the airways.
The Plug and Press is an isolated module that also forms part of the larger MDW Fighting Injured that covers weapons use and tactics that help you stay in the fight while injured.

  • How can you make a difference?

– Utilizing specifically designed first aid supplies available to the civilian and military market

MDW Plug and Press Video

The MDW Fighting Injured-Plug and Press course is an information and practical session, that focuses staying in the fight when injured and on the use of first aid supplies designed for the first line in field care of wounds that result in catastrophic bleeding and injuries to the airways.

The Baseline Plug and Press Course was developed with the objective to provide first line care to improve chances of survival till professional medical services are available.

Fighting Injured focuses on staying in the fight even when injured.

Course Content

  • Autonomic and trained reactions to dealing with injuries
  • Keeping your mind body and gun in the fight
  • Weapons manipulations, access and firing while injured
  • Tactics for working alone and or with a partner
  • In field self and buddy physical assessment
  • First line trauma care and decision making
  • Practical use of improvised as well as retail tactical first aid supplies

To operate in the dark, you need to understand its characteristics and be 100% proficient with your skills, techniques and equipment so you can take full advantage of the low light strategies and tactics you will employ to dominate when working on the dark side. This course focuses on close range low light confrontation with or without a handheld flashlight.

Fighting in and Around Vehicles focuses on skills necessary to react positively when simply driving out of high-risk conditions is impractical or denied. Because of the pace and mobile nature of this course there is a large emphasis both on combat skills and safety.

Fighting in and around vehicles- Soft Skin Stationary
This is our core skills flagship course for vehicles.
Fighting in and Around Vehicles focuses on skills necessary to react positively when simply driving out of high-risk conditions is impractical or denied. Because of the pace and mobile nature of this course there is a large emphasis both on combat skills and safety.

  • Weapon handling skills for combat
  • Vehicle terminal ballistics
  • Solo and two man drills inside and outside vehicles
  • Vehicle gun fighting concepts and force on force exercises

Fighting in and around vehicles -Hi Jackings and hold ups
Handgun hold ups and edged weapon attacks while you are in or around your vehicle create a dynamic and stressful scenario.

Course Content

  • Responding to Hi-Jacking threats
  • Understanding and dominating the vehicle space and doorways
  • Dealing with empty hand attacks
  • Dealing with edged weapon attacks
  • Recognizing when disarms are possible
  • Creating opportunities to achieve disarms.
  • Creating opportunities to access and use your side arm

Fighting vehicles-Mobile
This course covers the key aspects of mobile vehicle engagements while achieving the balance of the advantages of staying mobile and been able to direct fire at your enemy.

Course contents

  • Understanding mobile vehicle ambushes
  • Key counter ambush driving skills
  • Dealing with mobile attackers (other moving vehicles)
  • Bypassing or ramming barriers
  • Approaches to assist assets or team members under attack (driving toward ambushes in progress)

Fighting in and around vehicles – Vehicle Hostile Stop and Approach
Approaching vehicles is a dangerous exercise. In this course we focus on safety and command presence for approaching and or interacting with drivers and passengers of a stopped vehicle.

Course Content

  • Vehicle positioning in relation to “suspect” vehicle
  • Use of patrol vehicle for stand-off management of driver and passenger
  • Dynamic approaches
  • Two- and three-man vehicle approach- roles and formations for driver and passenger management
  • Vehicle searches

Escorting Vehicles
Escorting vehicles comes with a broad range of challenges specific to type of vehicle been escorted, type of goods been escorted, resources and escort vehicles been used.

Course Content

  • Planning and briefings
  • Communications
  • Role/s of escort and reaction teams
  • Weapon selection and use in various scenarios
  • Planning and performing hand overs and securing vehicles at destinations or depots
  • Escort formations and driving skills for different vehicle platforms

Focus on solo and two men -moving and shooting in and around structures and buildings when you do not have all the gear and back up that tactical teams have at their disposal.
